“Empty Policies for Empty Plates” International representatives of small farmers, fisherfolks, indigenous peoples, pastoralists and Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) have expressed their disappointment with the poor outcome of the High Level Conference on World Food Security in Rome. “The final declaration will not fill any plate. The recommendations for more liberalisation would lead to more violations of the right to food”, criticised Maryam Rahmanian from the Iranian organisation CENESTA. During the official conference, the social movements held their own Forum “Terra Preta” to voice their demands to realize food sovereignty and the right to food of the millions of hungry people.

The High Level Conference on Food Security is looking for a political answer to the severe hunger crisis, which has been manifested in more the 40 food riots over the last three months. It seem however that the FAO Summit will conclude by proposing the same recipes that are partly responsable for the crisis, such as more food aid, more liberalisation and more biotechnology. Important aspects like speculation are completely ignored, while on agrofuels, the draft declaration contains a very specific invitation for “dialogue”. The speakers are: Michael Windfuhr ( Germany), Brot fur die welt. Henry Saragih ( Indonesia) Via Campesina. Greetha Fernando ( SriLanka) Fisherman World Forum.

Events in Ramallah kicked off with a demonstration organized jointly by the Palestinian National Initiative and the Stop the Wall Campaign. Hundreds of protestors - mostly young people, women, and families from Gaza's origin - marched peacefully through Ramallah's central square carrying banners reading "Stop Israeli War Crimes in Gaza" and "Boycott Israeli Apartheid" with the logo of the world social forum. This Global Day of Action offers Palestinian democratic movements the chance to urge the world to intervene and stop what Nelson Mandela has defined 'the new Apartheid of our century,'".
