Indonesia-Jakarta Global Day of Action 26 jan 2008
Jakarta, Indonesia A coalition of Indonesian social movements marched in Jakarta today as part of the International Global Day of Action coordinated. Members of workers organisations, fisher folks, peasants and others, gathered at 2pm at the Indosat building (Jl Thamrin) and marched peacefully to the Presidential Palace asking for an « Indonesia without neoliberalism ». People are oppressed by current economic policies that put land, water and sea under the control of transnational companies and that undermine workers rights. Protesters raised key national issues such as the new investment law, import and liberalisation of food products, labour law, global warming and debt. The demonstration was organised by « Gerak Lawan », the Indonesian movement against nelocolonialism and neoliberalism that brings together workers, farmers, women, fisherfolks, students, anti-debt and environmental organisations. The Indonesian Peasants Union (SPI), member of the international movement La Via Campesina actively took part in this action. Read more…

WEF Palestine: Barghouti at opening event
Posted: 05/11/2010
10:41
Mustafa Bargouthi, democracy activist and politician, described the WEF as a key part of the international struggle for justice and peace. Invoking the words of Nelson Mandela, who upon his inauguration as president of South Africa said "our freedom will not be complete until the Palestinian people are free", Barghouti urged participants to join the global Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions Campaign (BDS), arguing that a broad international campaign similar to that which eventually brought down the South African apartheid regime is the only way to defeat the Israeli occupation. Presenting his vision of united and diverse Palestine, Barghouti denounced the remarks recently made by Angela Merkel about the failure of multiculturalism, insisting that there is place in the world, and in Palestine, for multiple cultures. Interview with Carola Reintjes (WFTO)
Posted: 27/01/2010

Carola Reintjes is the European representative of the World Fair Trade Organisation. Participating in S.Maria RS, Brasil at the 1st World Forum for Solidarity Economy (Jan.22-24, 2010), she affirms that Fair trade is a live movement that not only is part of the solidarity economy, but is growing within it, or otherwise it would be a paternalistic exchange between two actors, one who sells and one who buys. The WFTO is working on a certification system for enterprises who respect the values of fair trade. Read more…

Currently the biggest international "Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity" is taking place for the 9th time - this time in Bonn, Germany. The two past weeks the "4th Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Biosecurity" took place there as well. In Bonn, the big agroindustrial multinationals as Monsanto, Dupont, Syngenta, Limagrain, Bayer and Pioneer are pushing for the wider introduction of transgenics (including the so called Terminator Seeds) and the further industrialisation and commercialization of agriculture - as solutions so called "food crisis" and climate change. Members of Via Campesina explain what is at stake. Read more…
