Because of the coming Soccer World Championship in Brazil, many people are about to loose their homes - cheap housing next to the city for which they will not be adaquately compensated. The anti-eviction movements in Latin Amercia - concerning the eviction at the countryside as well as in the cities is gaining strength though. The population of Santa Cruz on the outskrits of Rio de Janeira is heavely suffering from the pollution caused by the steel plant run by Thyssen Krupp The allergic reactions of especially children are very severe, since there is not really a filter used to produce more cheaply. The CO2 emissions have risen in all Rio for over 70 % since the stellplant was inaugurated in 2007. Read more…

Via Campesina Action Day Berlin

This is a video about the 17th of April 2010 - celebrated as Via Campesina Action Day in rememberance of the massacre committed on Via Campesina activist farmers in Amazonia. In this year the activists in Berlin organized a number of discussions and film viewings and finally this meeting in a formerly squatted vegetable garden in the center of Berlin. "Another world is plantable" is written on the wall in this garden and the garden collective "Ton Steine Gärten" is planting food here since a year now. Also there is a small interview with an activist from "Reclaim the fields" a group which was formed in the last ESF in Sweden and is now squatting fields and planting food in various places in Europe. Since the change of the German welfare and dole money system, there have been a lot of protests. The unemployed are e.g. forced to take any kind of work for one EUR an hour to not loose their welfare. Also the poverty numbers, especially of children, have plummeted. The wages have dropped, but only of the lower incomes groups, while the top level has severly increased their incomes. Read more…
